Feature Photographer - Susana Raab

I am excited to introduce you all to the work of Susana Raab - her 'Sense of Place' series was shot with a Holga, and it has a unique mood and softness to it that I just love.  I hope you enjoy her beautiful photos!

How did you get introduced to your first Holga and how long have you been shooting?

I was introduced to the Holga through the work of my friends Louviere & Vanessa* who showed me that it could be used to achieve clarity and controlled and modified. David Burnette was also using the camera successfully to illustrate otherwise visually boring news stories, specifically the drop sites in a spy case in suburban DC.

What is it about the Holga that draws you to it? Why do you shoot with it?

I love that it is so basic, but you can control it, adapt its abilities to your needs. I enjoy being able to overlap frames on occasion, and the freedom when you are dealing with an inherently imperfect medium.

Please tell me a bit about your 'A Sense of Place' series.

A Sense of Place explores the homes of Southern writers Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, and Eudora Welty. I was inspired to work on Faulkner and Welty's homes after photographing O'Connors for the New York Times Travel Section. I used a holga then to imbue the pictures with a vintage look, and frankly make the shoot more fun and challenging for me. The idea behind the expanded series is that the spirit of these people remain in the objects and landscape that so affected them.

The series includes a lot of beautifully shot interiors. Was this difficult to shoot with a Holga? What challenges did you encounter and how did you over come them?

Nothing is impossible with a tripod. Just mounted the holga on the tripod and synched a flash while operating on bulb exposure.

What other cameras do you have in your arsenal?

Nikon D700, Crown Graphic 4x5, Mamiya 7, nikon f100.

Favourite photo film(s)?

Kodak TriX, Kodak Portra NC 160

Your favorite Holga photo that you've taken?
